Budget Minded Options for Single Cup Coffee Makers

The idea behind the single cup coffee maker is to minimize waste when only one or two cups of coffee are desired.  Some coffee makers do not work well when brewing less than four cups.

Buying disposable single cup coffee containers can be expensive when compared to the per cup cost if a larger quantity of loose coffee grounds are used in a standard coffee maker.  The single cup coffee makers reduce waste and give you a wide variety of choices of flavors to suit individual taste, but there is an added per cup cost.

For those who do not need the speed, convenience and wide choice of available varieties of single cup brews, there are options.

This coffee brewer is somewhat similar to an old fashioned double pot brewer.  You pour the water over the coffee grounds.  But there is no electricity involved in the actual brewing process.  Persons commenting on the product on Amazon say it requires a grind finer than most packaged ground coffees.  You might need to either use instant coffee powder or find a store with a grinder that allows for a finer grind, unless of course, you have your own grinder.  If you have your own grinder, you might need to grind it longer than you normally would for a standard coffee brewer.

There is also some disagreement as to whether to use cold, warm or hot water to brew the coffee.  Some reviewers say that using hot water causes the coffee to tend to be bitter tasting and have a high acid content.  If you like your coffee cold, then there is no problem in getting the smoother taste.  Some compromise by using warm water for the brewing process then pour it into a heated cup.

If you have a more sophisticated single cup brewer and simply want to cut down the cost of each individual cup and are content to buy your coffee beans or grounds in standard quantities, then there are single cup filters available to permit you to use your gourmet coffee brewer with bulk priced ground coffee.  One of the more popular brands of single cup coffee makers today is the Keurig line.  They offer a My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter which allows you to use your own ground coffee rather than their K-Cups.  These also are available on Amazon.

The Keurig My K-Cup Filter gets mixed reviews on Amazon.  The filter apparently takes some practice to become practical.  There are complaints of splashing of the coffee until you learn to control it and also there is some trial and error involved in getting the best flavor from your selection of coffee grounds.
